LPG for Homes Without Mains Gas in Victoria: What You Need to Know

LPG for Homes Without Mains Gas in Victoria

Since January 2024, Victoria has banned new mains gas connections for residential homes. If you are building a new home or moving to a property that has never had gas, you cannot connect to the gas network. But LPG is explicitly exempt from this ban — you can absolutely still use LPG gas bottles for your home.

What the Ban Means

The Victorian Government's gas substitution roadmap prohibits new connections to the natural gas distribution network for most new residential buildings. This affects new housing estates across Melbourne's growth corridors and new builds in regional areas like the Macedon Ranges.

What it does not affect: LPG. Bottled gas is a separate supply chain from the mains gas network. A 45kg LPG gas bottle delivered to your property is not a mains gas connection — it is an independent, portable gas supply that you own or rent.

Where This Matters Most

The suburbs hit hardest by the mains gas ban are the new housing estates in Melbourne's north and west — exactly the areas where Macedon Gas delivers:

  • Melbourne North — Donnybrook, Kalkallo, Wollert, Mickleham, Beveridge, Wallan. Thousands of new homes going up with no mains gas option.
  • Melbourne West — Aintree, Cobblebank, Fraser Rise, Plumpton, Mount Cottrell, Rockbank. Entire suburbs being built without gas infrastructure.
  • Macedon Ranges — new builds in Woodend, Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey, and rural properties that were never connected to mains gas in the first place.

What You Can Run on LPG

A 45kg LPG gas bottle can power everything mains gas can: hot water systems, ducted heating, space heaters, cooktops, and ovens. The appliances are the same — they just need to be configured for LPG instead of natural gas (your plumber or gasfitter handles this).

Getting Started

If you are building or moving into a home without mains gas in the Macedon Ranges or Melbourne's growth corridors, here is what to do:

  1. Ask your builder or plumber to install LPG-compatible appliances (or have existing appliances converted).
  2. Buy or rent a 45kg LPG gas bottle from Macedon Gas.
  3. We deliver to your property and set it up.
  4. Call us when you need a refill.

Macedon Gas delivers to over 45 suburbs across the Macedon Ranges, Melbourne's north, and Melbourne's west.
