LPG Gas Safety — What Every Household and Business Should Know

Macedon Gas takes safety seriously. LPG is a safe and reliable energy source when handled correctly — but there are important things every household and business in the Macedon Ranges should know about storing, using and maintaining gas cylinders and appliances.

How to Detect a Gas Leak

LPG is naturally odourless, but a strong smell similar to rotten eggs is added so leaks are easy to detect. If you notice this smell near your gas bottles or appliances, act immediately.

Other signs of a leak include a hissing sound near the cylinder valve, frost or ice forming on the regulator, or a pilot light that keeps going out.

What to Do If You Smell Gas

If you suspect a gas leak at your property in Woodend, Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey or anywhere in the Macedon Ranges:

  • Do not use any electrical switches, phones or open flames near the area
  • Turn off the gas valve on the cylinder if it is safe to do so
  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area
  • Move everyone away from the property
  • Call 000 from a safe distance if the leak does not stop

Storing Your LPG Cylinder Safely

Proper storage of your 45kg or 210kg gas cylinders is essential for safety at your home, farm or business. Follow these guidelines:

  • Keep cylinders upright and on a firm, level surface at all times
  • Store cylinders outdoors in a well-ventilated area — never inside a garage, shed or enclosed space
  • Keep cylinders at least 1 metre away from doors, windows, drains and ignition sources
  • Protect cylinders from direct heat and ensure the relief valve faces away from the building
  • Never tamper with the valve, regulator or fittings
  • For 210kg cylinders, ensure adequate clearance for delivery access and safe positioning

Preparing for Delivery Day

Before your 45kg LPG delivery or 210kg bulk LPG refill, make sure:

  • The area around your cylinders is clear of clutter, garden equipment and debris
  • Gates and access paths are unlocked and accessible for our delivery driver
  • Pets are secured away from the delivery area
  • You have turned off any gas appliances if swapping an active cylinder

Appliance Ventilation and Maintenance

All gas appliances in your home — whether for hot water, heating or cooking — need adequate ventilation and regular servicing. In the Macedon Ranges, winter demand on gas heaters is high, so it is especially important to have appliances checked before the colder months.

A licensed gasfitter should inspect your appliances at least every two years to check for carbon monoxide risk, ensure connections are tight and confirm the system is operating efficiently.

When to Replace Your Regulator

The regulator attached to your LPG cylinder controls the gas pressure flowing to your appliances. Regulators have a limited lifespan — typically around 10 years — and should be replaced if you notice discolouration, cracking, a persistent gas smell at the connection, or difficulty getting a consistent flame.

If you are unsure, contact a licensed gasfitter in the Macedon Ranges for advice. Read our detailed guide: Can I keep my existing gas regulator?

Cylinder Test Dates and Compliance

All LPG cylinders — both 45kg and 210kg — must be retested every 10 years as per Australian standards. The test date is stamped on the collar or neck ring of the cylinder. Every cylinder supplied by Macedon Gas is inspected and verified to be within its test period and fully compliant before delivery.

If your cylinder is out of test, it cannot legally be refilled. We will replace it with a compliant cylinder during your next delivery.
