Can I Keep My Existing Gas Regulator? What Macedon Ranges Homeowners Need to Know
Can I Keep My Existing Gas Regulator?
When you switch gas suppliers or get a new 45kg LPG bottle delivered, one of the most common questions we hear from Macedon Ranges homeowners is: can I keep my existing regulator, or do I need a new one?
The Short Answer
Usually, yes — you can keep your existing regulator. When Macedon Gas delivers a new 45kg LPG gas bottle, our driver connects it using the regulator and flexible hose already on your property. We do not require you to buy new equipment from us.
However, there are two situations where your regulator will need replacing.
When You Need a New Regulator
1. It has expired. Every LPG regulator in Australia has a 10-year life from the date of manufacture. The date is stamped on the regulator body — look for a month and year (e.g. "06/18" means June 2018, expiring June 2028). If your regulator is past its 10-year date, it must be replaced before we can connect a new bottle. This is an Australian safety standard, not a supplier policy.
2. It is damaged or faulty. If your regulator is cracked, corroded, leaking, or shows signs of wear, it needs replacing. Our drivers will let you know if they spot an issue during delivery.
Who Replaces the Regulator?
A licensed gasfitter should replace your regulator. This is a quick job — usually under 30 minutes. Your gasfitter will supply and fit a new regulator and test the connection. If you do not have a regular gasfitter, ask us for a recommendation in the Macedon Ranges area.
What About Changing from Natural Gas to LPG?
If you are moving from a mains gas property to a property with 45kg LPG bottles (common when moving within the Macedon Ranges), your appliances and regulator may need converting. Natural gas and LPG operate at different pressures and use different fittings. A gasfitter can convert most appliances by changing the gas jets and fitting an LPG regulator.
With Victoria's ban on new mains gas connections, more Macedon Ranges homes are switching to LPG — so this is becoming a very common job for local gasfitters.
What About the Flexible Hose?
The flexible hose connecting your regulator to the gas bottle also has a limited life. Check for:
- Cracks or splits in the rubber.
- Kinks or tight bends.
- Signs of weather damage or UV deterioration.
- The date stamp — hoses also have an expiry.
If in doubt, ask your gasfitter to inspect the hose when they check the regulator.
Bottom Line
You do not need to buy anything from Macedon Gas except gas. Your existing regulator and hose are fine as long as they are within date and in good condition. We deliver 45kg LPG to over 45 suburbs across the Macedon Ranges — order your next delivery today.
